[ Ens. Cara Siobhan Ross | Just outside the Miolian Research Station | Archer IV] Attn:
Deciding the polite thing to do would not be to point out to T'Mil that the first words out of her mouth were rather obvious, Cara focused on catching her breath and trying not to cringe when she heard the fire being exchanged behind her, from the MACO's and the giant cat bastards - Kzinti, as they were called. Her brow furrowed as the Vulcan went on, leaving her in a deep frown by the time she finished up. "Ah ahpreciate th'run down," she noted dryly, deciding she wouldn't chastise their Vulcan allies for not having made a note of these blokes before. If they weren't native to the area, and hadn't been seen in a score of years, there were like as not no reason to leave that out of the files. The Vulcan's only ever shared what was expedient, as far as Cara could tell. "Ah wager people eatin' cat buggers aren't exactly germaine to yer everyda' conversations." Dry as a desert gulch, that was Cara.
She nodded in agreement with Gideon, even if she'd been hoping he might take the duty of telling the CO, what with him being higher rank. But she was the poor chappy on the site at the time. Looking back, carefully, over the rim of the shuttlepod's forward hull, she blanched as a nasty thought cropped up. "er, Ensign T'Mil. 'ow long do yee recokon' we 'ave t'do anything fer th' cap'n - tha is, fer Lt. Locke? If ah...these cat blokes are carnevors and people eaters and all that..." she let her voice trail off, quietly. She hadn't exactly taken a swift liking to Olivia's former wife, what with assuming her CO walked on water, as newly minted officers tended to of their first commanders, but at the same time, she despised the notion that they might already be eating the hapless outpost researcher.
Gideon, quicker on the draw than Cara, or T'Mil handed the former one of the spare pistols from the shuttlepods locker. We'll see ef Ah cannae lose this one, eh? she grimly noted, though aloud all she said was, "Aye sir," and checked the weapons charge. The energy cell appeared to be full, so she dutifully snapped the top back into place, just like she'd been trained, and confirmed that the hand weapon was set to stun. She then rubbed her sweaty palms on the grass that made up the landing zone - her pants still damp from the slime and the water and mud - and tried to calm herself down.
All th'bloody trainin' in th'wurld dinnae prep ye for this shite, Cara, she reflected, her face pale with anxiety. She failed to notice that Oliva had come out of the compound, as she popped up, along side Gideon and T'Mil, to begin laying cover fire down from their side of the Shuttlepod, taking pot shots in the general direction of the Kzinti in the treeline. The phase pistol hummed in her grip, though there was no jump like the old plasma pistols might have had. Vibrant beams of focused, red orange energy spat forth in small bursts, the young redhead gently easing her finger back against the firing stud, as she'd been told. As long as she couldn't really see the giant shapes as anything really distinct, she didn't have to see it as shooting someone, just ....hitting a target silhouette. Just like training down in the Discovery's armory.

[Commander Olivia Saugn | Just outside the Miolian Research Outpost | Archer IV] attn: Brutus
Olivia was glad for all that training in martial arts. One of the best aspects of martial arts was moving quietly, stealthily. The best martial art for quick unseen movement, in Olivia’s opinion, was Suus Mahna, one of the more popular martial arts of the Vulcans. The particular movement in mind was actually navorkot. The move was designed to evade enemy blades by dropping to the ground, rolling to the side, and then returning to a standing position. However, Olivia discovered it was particularly useful not just for evasion, period, but for quick, silent movement.
It took practice to even pull it off, and she mostly practiced on a starship. In nature, rolling around can cause some noise, but with the hullabaloo going on, and attention focused, she wasn’t even noticed by the officers at the shuttlepod when she snuck over. She couldn’t help but smile a little at the reactions made by the officers at the shuttlepod when she showed up.
“Yeah, yeah,” she said with a smile. “Usually rains half-bald tatted blondies here on Archer Four. How’d you get slimed, Ross?”
For she had just noticed that Ross had been slimed. But her attention was back on their attacker. Their lone attacker…
“Motherf…”
Her expletive was cut off from a blast from a discharge that would’ve blown her head off if she had been a few more inches to the right. She ducked down, but not before getting a good look at the attacker.
“A shootout with a tiger man,” she said aloud. “Feels more like having a shootout with Khan Singh in Dodge City.”
In Olivia’s opinion, it was a better comparison than comparing the tiger-man with a Klingon.
“Keep drawing the pussycat’s fire,” ordered Olivia. “I’m going to serve him a cucumber.”
With that, she looked up again at the tiger man’s position, to get where he is at, and then proceeded to navorkot around, doubling back. It was particularly easy to roll around behind the shuttlepod, then into the trees, where she can just simply walk stealthily and not need to roll.
She realized that there was more action further in the trees. She recognized the three MACOs, the ones who beamed down to the outpost after her, including Sergeant Ruiz. And they were in trouble. But first things first.
She made another navorkot behind the tiger man engaging the rest of the crew, and once she was instantly behind him…
“Cucumber!” she shouted. The tiger man whirled around in time to see the barrel of her phase pistol before she unloaded a discharge of stun in his face.
“One down, two to go,” she said as she holstered her phase pistol; she was eager to try out her martial arts moves on a real enemy, as opposed to a sparring partner or some punching bag.

[ Syrano | Just outside the Miolian Research Outpost | Archer IV ] The next thing he saw was bright lights. It hurt his eyes, he screwed all four of them shut in an effort to protect his vision. He did not see where he wound up after that, but he heard a change in sound, and more importantly he tasted the change in the air. It was so dry! So horribly dry and sterile that his skin crawled to taste the air like this. Burning, that’s what it tasted like. Then he opened his eyes, only the UV-seeing ones. He saw traces of ultraviolet, but none of them resembled the sort of organic UV markings he had come to expect of his home. Opening his main set of eyes, he saw the transporter room as it was. What a dreadful place this was, filled with awful, hideous creatures. At least he could recognize Authorized-to-Negotiate Major-Anson-Claudius, but he had no idea what the other thing was in the room. Truthfully, Syrano could not tell which of the two was uglier. They spoke between each other using unfamiliar, foreign sounds, before the universal translator could kick back in and he heard them speak in his language. Oh, how they butchered his poor, beautiful language… The two continued to speak as if Syrano were not there. Interact as if Syrano were doing something else. Speak to him as if they knew what he was doing. It was all so strange and alien. He could really, really use a drink. Since the two were speaking about him as if he were not there, he decided he would act as if they were not there either. He stepped off the transporter pad, navigating the step down as if his legs were not yet used to the sensation of climbing up and down. Just as he managed to step off the transporter, the creature known as Gecht spoke to him. His eyes narrowed as he observed the…thing. “That’s all quite fine. My board is paid for. I find it improbable that you have accommodations that suit my needs simply lying about, considering how…bitter…this environment is.” He winced, but he would have to solve the problem himself. As soon as he had a pool, a tank, a pond, something--he’d begin attempting to farm algae. Anything to make this environment more bearable. Speaking of… “You should be warned that your bacteria and mine are not likely to be compatible, if the reaction of the red-top known as Cara-Siobhan-Ross is to be believed. Sharing accommodations could be deadly, at worst.” He reminded them, with the quiet disdain of someone who would actually murder to be anywhere else, if he could. [Mister Gecht | Transporter Room | Deck Four | Starship Discovery NX-04 | In orbit of Archer IV] Attn: Syrano, nyuura Gecht had to smile when Syrano mentioned how improbable his accommodations have. “Oh, that’s quite alright,” he said. “I’ve heard that before, even among humans. As a matter of fact, I do, Mister Syrano, have accommodations to suit your needs. And don’t worry about bacteria conflicting with ours; we have various disinfectants to kill any potentially harmful bacteria.” It was true, in point of fact. Gecht learned about chlorine and bromine, commonly used among humans in their pools, and contributions from other races have provided newer disinfectants for pool safety, eliminating pool-based diseases like cryptosporidium, or Crypto, for short. He did smile all the wider when he mentioned Ensign Ross. He can easily imagine the redheaded girl’s reaction to getting slimed. For he could easily see that Syrano was the type to give out slime, almost like a fish. Definitely the aquatic type, Gecht thought. “It’s understandable if this environment is bitter, as you say,” he continued. “Just wait until you see the accommodations, though; I’ve modified a certain area of the ship that’s suitable to me and to my attendants. Oh yes,” he added, “there are more like me, and we also require the need for water at times. It’s just on this deck. Just follow me.” He continued to speak as he led Syrano through the deck to the general Chelon accommodations. He noticed Major Claudius following behind them, almost like a security escort. He wondered if he and Syrano have any further business. It better be business, instead of the awkward nonsense he spits out, Gecht thought. “You’ll have to pardon me if I look intimidating,” he said. “It’s natural upon first reactions. I’m from a planetary system called Rigel. I’m one of three subspecies of Rigelian, known specifically as Chelons. We’re commonly compared to what humans call ‘turtles,’ native to their home planet of Earth. The other two species include the Jelna, who are more humanoid, and the Zami, who tend to more resemble humans. “Oh, and you needn’t worry about Ensign Ross, who you addressed by her full name,” he continued. “We have a decontamination chamber on this ship to eliminate any harmful diseases that any crewmember had potentially caught. You’d be surprised at the technology on the ship.”
==OOC Note: Continued in Chapter 2B. The post is here to mostly follow up syrano's previous post; I realized I was leaving out some stuff, including what he was replying to. More on-board action will take place aboard in Chapter 2B, some of the subplot pertaining around Syrano in the same way as Prologue B. ==

[ Ens. Cara Siobhan Ross | Just outside the Miolian Research Station | Archer IV] Attn:
Sure enough, the Commander's approached had gone unnoticed by Ross, as well as Drake and T'Mil, or at least as far as the sticky Scot could tell. She nearly jumped when she realized Oliva was there, which, probably contributed to the amused reaction from the Discovery's commanding officer. A flush touched upon Cara's cheeks, behind the filter mask and she muttered something under her breath as she willed her already pounding heart to slow back down. Having the question put to her by her captain regarding her current state did little to improve her mood.
"An arrogant foo - er, tha'es, th'guest bloke they were jammerin' aboot gunked me. Bloo--bloke's got tenta'cles, mum, and they right sticky. 'E took oofense ah bein' scanned. Patted me on th'ead. Foul smellin' gobshi - stuff." She managed to get out, taking another pot shot over the bow of the shuttlepod in the process, while trying to reign her language in. Just because the Captain swore like a sailor sometimes did not permit the freshly minted Ensign the right to do the same in her presence. She didn't get to add anything else because the captain nearly got her head taken off.
Cara paled, considerably, at how close the Commander came to losing her head. Given that Cara thought it a rather nice head, and that it properly belonged atop Saugn's neck, she was rather relieved it was still there. She was less than thrilled that the CO was going to go off all cowgirl on the things shooting at them, but there was little she could do, beyond muttering a shaky, "Aye aye, mum,"[/color] and popping back up. Now of course, she had the worry that her head would be taken off next. And sure enough, return fire came close. Ye augh'ta pick a differn' spot t'pop up like a wee barin next time, Cara, she chastised herself, tucking her back firmly in against the shuttle pod's protective bulk.
It was only after the commander had already ducked off that Cara frowned, and looked over at Drake. "What the fook's she mean, given' th'kitty-pricks ah Cucumber?" she asked, confused. She watched as T'Mil arched one delicate eyebrow high up upon her forehead, and Gideon grunted off a, "I'm sure we'll find out, Ensign. Now, all together, on three. One. Two, Three!"
All three Starfleet officers rose as one - Cara going for the side of the bow for her shot this time, instead of just popping right back up like a jack in the box - and blasted the tree line. She didn't thinks she 'd nailed anything, but a few seconds later she heard the sharp burst of a somewhat further away phase pistol going off. Dryly, as they rolled back behind cover, T'Mil noted. "That, I believe, was a cucumber."
'Aye well, she could'a just said she was gonna blast th'fookin' cat," the red head groused, apparently unbothered by Gideon's rank, unlike the Commanders.

[Sergeant Raquel Ruiz | Outside the Miolian Research Outpost | Archer IV] attn: Brutus Raquel could feel the blood pouring down her face from where Big-and-Ugly scratched her at one point. Like getting punched by a tiger…except that thing was a bipedal tiger to put it mildly. Raquel also felt her nose break and felt some teeth get knocked out from the blows laid from the bipedal tiger. She was feeling a buildup of blood in her breather mask. But Raquel stood her ground. I’m not running off like that nutless ensign is going to, she thought. It’s either me or el gato, and frankly, it’s close enough to fighting a Xindi or a Romulan…whatever the suck a Romulan looks like. Her knife had long been deflected, embedded against the side of a tree. Now Raquel was fighting hand to hand. But Big-and-Ugly merely laughed whenever he laid a blow. “You’re resilient, I’ll give you that,” he said. “If you weren’t a female, I would regard you a worthy opponent.” Mierda, he’s not only chauvinistic, he’s also sexist, Raquel thought; if it weren’t for the buildup of blood coming from her mouth, she would’ve lashed out a retort. The offense at his comment added new strength to Raquel’s resolve. She leapt up and began making a flurry of blows. Long and hard. But she was amazed at how tough he was. A flurry of blows like she had made would’ve dislocated a jaw, dislodged half the teeth already in the mouth, maybe even broken a nose to the point where it would’ve been twisted at a forty-five degree angle. But all she got from el tigre was a slight spill on his nose. He even put a finger up to it and took a look at the blood. “All that for a drop of blood, female?” he said, almost in amusement. “Surely you could do better.” The only way I could do better would be as if I was born a Klingon, Raquel thought in a retort. “Oh, I’m sure Klingons would be more worthy opponents, but I’m surprised to find that such little animals like you would be just as stubborn and resilient.” Raquel blinked in surprise. Hold up, you can read my mind?
“Of course I can,” the Claw replied, even more amused by the female’s ignorance. “Some of us are capable of reading minds.” So now I’m dealing with a sexist chauvinist psychic, thought Raquel. What other surprises do you pussycats even have up your sleeves?“I’m not a psychic,” snapped the Claw. “I’m just a telepath. Real psychics are rare. But it hardly matters. My captain would like very much to enjoy a spar with you, female, before we eat you.” Wonderful. Sexist, chauvinist, telepath, and cannibal.“Carnivore,” the Claw corrected. “Now, enough of these thoughts, I need my strength to deal with the rest of you puny humans.” Raquel could instantly see a pro and con at the same time. If reading minds fatigues the big lug, then she would’ve hoped to continue the mental conversation, but it seemed Big-and-Ugly wasn’t as stupid as she hoped; he was aware of how draining it is. The Claw lifted Raquel up, holding her by the neck, and pinning her against a tree, the same tree where her knife was embedded. He had just lifted a fist to make a finishing blow. Raquel paled, momentarily afraid. I’ll be coming, mi familia, she thought. Joining the rest of you, to see you again. At least I went out in a blaze of glory, rather than getting blown away by the Xindi weapon. I hope to see you again…except my old man.“Cucumber!” Raquel and the Claw looked up to see who said that. Then there was the sound of a phase pistol discharge and a body collapsing. The lack of sound from the tiger’s shooting told Raquel that whoever said “cucumber” had taken out the shooter. Raquel momentarily smiled; she remembered those old clips of cucumbers placed covertly behind a cat, scaring it crapless. Big-and-Ugly was still looking in the direction of the noise, and it was all the distraction Raquel needed. Seeing the knife, she grabbed its hilt, and with the same surge of strength expected in a person who’s downright pissed, she pulled it out of the tree and sliced along the whole face of the tiger, who let out a yowl of pain and dropped Raquel, putting both hands to his face. Dropped to the ground, Raquel then plunged her knife downward at the bare feet of the tiger. The resulting stab took off a toe from the big guy. And now, you’ve been served a cucumber yourself, pussycat, thought Raquel in contempt.
== OOC Note: Pardon for the lenghtiness. Also, bear in mind, some Kzinti are telepaths; just look at their wiki article. Again, in your next post, Brutus, feel free to keep NPCing, especially the remaining Kzinti soldier. ==

[ Ens. Cara Siobhan Ross | Just outside the Miolian Research Station | Archer IV] Attn:
The sound of phase pistol fire filled the air, and not just from the trio behind the Discovery's shuttlepod. The raport of the pulse weapons that the MACO's used, as well as the stream bursts of Commander Saugn's side arm joined the chorus of from the Research Outposts defenders. Cara heard the mixed whines, interspersed with blasts from what she assumed had to be the alien's own firearms. She wondered, in her own way, if they'd continue to ring in her ears long after the fire fight ended. There was a sharp rapport, and then a splash of energy across the shuttles frame as a trio of bolts crashed in from the kzinti's weapon, throwing up a sharp light. Cara round herself dropping back down to the ground and shutting her eyes tightly, grunting out a strained "Bloody 'ell that was close," and sucking in a deep breath. To her consternation, T'Mil, the Vulcan communication's specialist, managed to stay upright, though Drake was shielding his eyes as well, blinking rapidly.
With an eerie sort of ease, the darker skinned Vulcan popped off another shot, and another, unphased by the smattering of return fire. "I would suggest that you direct your fire 2.3 meters to the right of your previous shot, Ensign," she calmly instructed. To Lt. Drake, she added, "And if you would be obliging, please scatter a round of bursts about head level through that cluster of trees in 4 seconds, Lieutenant. My power cell is about to over heat."
Behind said trees, the Kzinti warrior took a moment to catch its breath and steady itself. The scent of prey filled the air, some familiar, some new. Most smelled like the woman they had taken, and the researchers they had observed at the outpost, though one smelled dry, of dust. Vul-can it thought, having long ago encountered another of that particularly frustrated race of prey. All cowering behind their transport pod, covering their faces with their masks. The Kzinti needed no such protection, the pollen in the air finding no purchase in their own feline DNA. The only chemical reactions affecting the warrior was the lust for the hunt, for the prey that lingered so close, angrily trying to defend itself. These observations passed within seconds, as he crouched low and began a sprinting charge to his left, intent on circling around the trio of defenders.
Still a bit baffled by the Vulcan, Cara could only shrug and look to Gideon. "You heard the lady," the lieutenant noted with a sort of 'what do we have to lose' look about his face. Just then, the pistol in T'Mil's hand let out a protesting sort of whine and she dropped down to her knees, holding it by the barest touch on the hand grip as heat discharged from the firearm.
" 'er we go agahin," the younger scientist muttered and did just as she was instructed. This time however she dropped down on her belly, just at the edge of the nosecone for the shuttle pod and sighted down the barrel. Above her head, Gideon's fire lashed out, striking a few trees, scoring some marks and evoking a hissing snarl from the tree line. He hadn't hit the Kzinti, whom had been running low to the ground, but he'd come close enough to force the cat creature to draw up and shift its position, cutting in harder toward the Research outpost - and right into the line of fire from Cara Ross, as instructed by the Vulcan. "Holy shite,"[/color] she swore, as the yellow orange beam connected with something in a break of the tree line, that went sprawling back with an angry roar.
"What does religious fecal matter have to do with any of this?" T'Mil asked, confusion writ in her voice as she twisted her phase pistol from side to side, confirming the heat discharge had finished.
"Fer a commun-i-cations expert, ye sure lack ahn understahndin' of communciatin'," was the only reply from the Scot, as she lined up another shot into the tree gap. She wasn't sure her first shot had actually taken the cat-man down, and though she couldn't see where it was, shooting between the trees seemed like a good follow up.

[Commander Olivié Saugn | Outside the Miolian Research Outpost | Archer IV] attn: Brutus Olivié heard the yowl of pain and ran to the source. She burst in just in time to see Sergeant Ruiz chopping off a toe from one of the big tigers, bigger and uglier than the rest. Ruiz managed to grab the toe before being kicked aside. “Hey! Kitty!” she shouted. “I don’t want to hurt you further, nor the rest of your comrades, but your aggression tells me plenty. We only wanted to talk, but we’re not afraid to defend ourselves.” The Claw, yowling in pain, aimed a kick at the female that severed his to. He seethed, grit his sharp teeth. He was satisfied that the female was knocked a meter away, but then he looked up to see another female. This one was in a different garb. And she was partially bald, with an odd marking on the head. This one seemed to look so confident, the Claw could practically smell it. This one must undoubtedly be the leader of the humans. Or a leader of humans. In any case, he couldn’t see any more of his fellow comrades. He had to make a withdraw. “You have nerve, to talk to a wounded animal, female,” he snarled. “The red-maned female we have taken is quite the contrast from you and the other female here,” he added, gesturing at Raquel, who was spluttering curses in Spanish as she picked herself up. “Frightened creatures never taste as delicious as courageous ones.” Olivié only hardened her expression when she heard the implication that this…thing intended to eat Helen while they had her captive. Helen held as hostage was bad enough news. “If you do anything to harm her, I swear to God, I’ll make you regret it,” she snarled back. “You and whoever let you even allow you to actin cannibalism.” “The second female to mistake me as a cannibal,” the Claw scowled. “We of Kzin are carnivores. I care not for your ignorance. But your passion is fascinating. Females are so different.” “Enough of the sexist crap,” Olivié snapped. “If you are a ranking member of your crew, then perhaps you would relay to your commander a message that we want to meet?” “We have nothing to discuss with humans, let alone with females.” “Then I will warn you that we will not tolerate any acts of aggression, let alone further attempts you will make,” said Olivié with indignation. “Long have you threatened these researchers, but your attack tells me you’ve crossed a line. Again, we are prepared to defend ourselves.” “Females,” he scowled. “You may have won for now, but we will meet again. Pray you don’t meet me when I am in my full fury.” Before Olivié could move further, the cat was gone. She was astounded at how nimble the brute was, even with a severed toe. She holstered her phase pistol and turned to Ruiz, battered and bloody, more blood from the cat splattered over her, for it was the foot she cut the toe from that kicked her. She still held the toe tightly like a precious harmonica. “You look like crap, Sergeant,” Olivié said. “Jefa, I never felt more alive in my life,” said Ruiz, sounding angry from being in some pain, but definitely having resolve to be alive. Olivié heard it before; it was the sound her voice made after finding her father murdered himself and the rest of her family. “And I even have a souvenir to commemorate the trip.” Somehow, Olivié had a feeling Ruiz was enjoying warfare too much. She was going to have words with her about restraint. Olivié then noticed the other two MACOs dragging an unconscious tiger man with them. She could tell from the burn on shoulder that he was dropped by a phase pistol on stun. She made a note to congratulate whoever made the shot. “I think we need to entrench here, Ruiz,” said Olivié. “And we need to get the researchers out of here. Out of harm’s way. These tigers drew first blood, and they’ll be back. And in greater numbers. And they have a hostage, to boot.” “Your ex,” said Ruiz, acknowledging hearing. “Poor mujer.” “You don’t know Helen the way I do,” snapped Olivié. “She’s no more a researcher than a Vulcan’s a go-go dancer. However and whatever questionable crap Helen did to convince a research team to allow a linguist in as an exobiologist, I’m not letting her die at the hands of these barbarians. Still, I hope her linguistic expertise will stall for time until we can save her butt.” Ruiz nodded at Olivié’s words, throwing her bloody wounds in relief. Olivié noticed this. “Ruiz, you and I will accompany the researchers back to the ship,” said Olivié. “You need an appointment with Sickbay and decon; who knows what diseases these cats are bringing with them.” “Understood, jefa,” said Ruiz. “I’ll have the muchachos set up shop.” “Good,” said Olivié, and so the two women proceeded back to the outpost.

[ Ens. Cara Siobhan Ross | Just outside the Miolian Research Station | Archer IV] Attn:
Eventually the fire from the treeline stopped. The sound of slightly more distant weapons trailed off too. Some of the MACO's peeled off from the station and went into the forest, motioning for the Starfleet crew to stay back. Cara was more than happy to oblige them at that point, as she leaned forward and lay her head against the slowly warming hull of the shuttle pod. She drew in a long, slow breath, like she would if she were about to begin a series of yoga poses. In through the nose, out through the mouth.
This wasn't the smartest move, for she still stank from the gunk the over sized pompus ass had spattered her with, even after the dunk in the local pond water. Still, she needed to calm her nerves. She could feel T'Mil's eyes on her, resting squarely at her back, evaluating whether or not to speak. Gideon Drake was saying something or another to the Vulcan, but Cara ignored him, in much the same way the comm's specialist did. Raising a hand to wave them off, Cara turned, opening her eyes and shaking her head a bit. "Ah caen see yer wurried. Nuffin' t'be frettin' ovah. Just ah...tha'was exauhstin'."
One delicate eyebrow arched up across the Vulcan's forehead, not quite vanishing into the woman's hairline. It was a close thing though. "Indeed. Combat usually is," the Vulcan said, just as calm as if she were reading off a frequency setting aboard the Discovery for linking up to a comm's satellite. Utterly nonplussed, the Vulcan then stepped away from the others and moved off to talk to one of the Macos. Gideon looked at Cara and shrugged.
"Come on Ensign. I see the grunts are bringing in a bagged cat. Go science the shit out of it, eh?" He seemed to have found the right words to shock Cara out of the post adrenaline slump that had hit her like a swift kick in the chest. She blinked, and turned, eyes going wide. There was the Commander, looking intact, and the sergeant with the foul mouth and rival temper looking...considerably worse for ware. Already Lt. Drake was setting out toward them, calling to the Captain. Cara pulled out her scanner and trotted after, flipping it up and moving toward the unconscious cat, taking as many readings as she could. Soon enough she'd be back aboard the Discovery where she could cross reference everything she'd recorded for both this Kzinti and whatever the hell Syrano was.
"Bloody 'ell yer a right bruiser, ahint' ya?" she muttered, looking at the readings. She wished for a moment she had one of the more medically attuned scanners, but this would do. Ross couldn't be sure that this was the one that she had shot at (it was) nor that she had knocked it out (she had). But she was frankly frightened and excited by what she was seeing. "Cap'n, ah'd 'ave t'say tha' these blokes wuld give ah' Kling'n a strong run fer their money." But Oliva was already making a bee line toward the base, to deliver orders and execute whatever plan she'd come up with. Taking one last look at the knocked out prisoner, Cara gave a jerky sort of nod to the two MACO's flanking it, then took off after Drake and Saugn.

[Sergeant Raquel Ruiz | Outside the Miolian Research Outpost | Archer IV] attn: Brutus
“Amigos!” Raquel shouted at Dhanial and Hanson as she wiped off her own blood. “I want that tiger man immobilized! Chain him to the wall, wrap him up in enough duct tape to reach the moon, I don’t give a crap! I want to make sure he doesn’t cause us any trouble!”
“Sarge!” said the MACOs in affirmative and they dragged the stunned tiger away, after Commander Saugn to the outpost.
Raquel eventually stepped into the clearing and saw company. Her own squad, El Guapo the helmsman, the Bollywood Vulcan (Raquel always thought T’Mil looked like someone out of India; put her in a saree and the right jewelry, and she’d fit the part), and Pelirroja…and she was surprised to see what was up with Pelirroja.
“Mierda,” said Raquel when she drew closer. “What happened to you, Pelirroja? I’d assume that either you tried to escape the gullet of some freaking huge animal or a freaking huge animal blew its nose all over you.”
“Sergeant!” shouted Commander Saugn. Raquel turned to see that she had brought out the head researcher and the wuss. “We’re getting Commander Svoboda’s team back to Discovery. You and Ensign Ross are coming back up with us; we need a trip to Decon, and in your case, you need a trip to Sickbay.”
“I can understand Pelirroja, with what crap she’s got,” said Raquel, “but why me, too, jefa?”
“Have you looked at yourself, sergeant?!?” asked Commander Saugn. “It would’ve taken a drunk Klingon to do this much damage.”
“I’d eat Klingons for breakfast,” said Raquel with a smile. “I’ve never felt so alive.”
“Nonetheless,” snapped Saugn. “The least you need is a patch-up. Besides, who knows what the Kzinti have on them, we touched aliens unknown to us. We don’t know what they were carrying. Lieutenant Drake, prepare the shuttlepod for a short trip back to Discovery; we’re taking in a couple of more guests. T’Mil, see if you can monitor the communications and translate what these Kzinti were talking about. Sergeant, I believe these are your troops to instruct?”
Raquel nodded; the MACOs were her responsibility.
“Hombres, listen up!” she said. “We’re setting up shop here. Expect a new attack from the pussy cats. Kelly, you’re in charge until I get back. Set up a perimeter, prepare defenses, arrange patrols, the whole nine yards. I expect this joint to be prepared for an assault by the time I get back with Commander Saugn. And tell Dhanial and Hanson to expect beaming up once transporters are working again, they’ll also need a trip to Decon.”
“SARGE!” Beta Squad shouted in affirmative.
She then joined Commander Saugn in accompanying the researches to the shuttlepod and boarded. She sat across from the wuss, Ensign Kassab, who said, “Frankly, I’m glad to get out of here. After what we’ve been through, and now that Lieutenant Locke is gone…the safest place for us right now is aboard a starship.”
Raquel let out a scoff and gestured the Finger in response. If the wuss had said that to anybody else, serving on any other ship, he would’ve gotten a more positive appraisal. Heck, three years ago, she would’ve naively agreed. But he certainly didn’t know what she and the rest of the crew went through when Discovery was getting pounded by Romulans. If, at any point while Discovery was dragging back to earth, if anybody told her that Discovery was the safest place to be, she would’ve told the pendejo who said it to visit Sickbay.
== OOC Note: The researchers are being evacuated to Discovery. As a note, the action will momentarily go back to the ship, mostly to Sickbay and DECON, particularly for Cara. Brutus, please feel free to continue NPCing. Continue to particularly NPC T’Mil and Gideon, you’re doing a good job so far. ==

[ Ens. Cara Siobhan Ross | Just outside the Miolian Research Station | Archer IV] Attn:
Cara turned and scowled a bit when Sgt. Ruiz pulled up next to her and pulled a face that Cara could easily make out even with the filter masks they both wore. She pursed her lips behind her mask and counted back from ten before answering curtly, "Aye, ye wee brassy, ah did run int'ah slimy fooker. Yer boss 'as taken 'em back up to th'Disc'v'ry. Th'less Ah see o'em the better." She hadn't quite been swallowed by Syrano, and he hadn't quite blown his nose, but the end result had been about the same. Even after she tried so hard to wash it all off in the pond.
All of this was, of course, before she'd had to run pell-mell away from the Kzinti that attacked. But she held her tongue going forward, when the commander issued her orders. Sighing softly, Cara turned and shuffled toward the shuttle pod as Lt. Drake stood at the door, ushering everyone in. Ross knew better than to argue. She wasn't some pig headed ground pounder like Ruiz. Decon was a must for her, and a full sweep by the ships doctors was in order. She wasn't looking forward to it, but what could she do? She watched Ruiz flip the bird at one of the base scientists as he was being loaded into the pod, venting her anger out on him instead of the CO.
Snorting, Cara boarded the ship, and tried not to drip on anything. Across from her, T'Mil watched, arching an eyebrow. "Aye, whut chu'lookin' at?" the Scot asked with a grunt, throwing herself back onto the bench with her arms crossed under her bust. The Vulcan watched stoically for a long moment, before responding.
"Simply observing, Ensign. Nothing more, nothing less." The answer was short and cryptic, just like the Vulcan herself, and left Cara thoroughly unsatisfied. It was very typically a Vulcan response, for that matter. Utterly unsatisfying indeed. The reply earned a huff, and Cara diverted her eyes, sulking as the doors the the shuttle pod closed tightly.
"All right everyone, buckle up. Keep your hands and feet inside the pod at all times," Gideon turned in his chair to address the rest of the cramped pod, doing a visual check to confirm that everyone was aboard and the doors were sealed up tight. "This will be a quick trip back and then we can dock and ah...fumigate this thing. Sorry, Ensign," he added with an apologetic smile to Ross, whom had to resist the urge to stick her tongue out. That was a bit too childish for the red head. Instead she focused on removing the filter mask, now that the air inside the pod had bee recycled during the start up. There was a small shudder, and then the craft broke away from the surface, leaving the base - and Helen Locke - behind.
[ Dr. Xander Minos & Ens. Cara Siobhan Ross | Decon chamber | E-Deck | NX-04 Discovery ]
Lt. Xander Minos strode down the hall, his boots bouncing on the deck plating as he moved to the observation post at the Decon chamber nearest the primary shuttle bay on the saucer section. A hold over from the original design, the pods remained docked at the bottom of the primary hull, and Xander had been forced to hustle when the call came in after the shuttle pods had broken out of the atmosphere of Archer IV. He'd grumbled the whole way down, but now that he was here, remained quiet.
Instead of entering the chamber room, he hovered outside of the doors leading in, pulling up one of the monitors bolted to the wall of the corridor by the door. Through this, he could observe the tenants of the chamber without knowledge. This was a habit of his - observing before engaging, and one that he practiced whenever he could. One could tell, or so he believed at least, quite a bit about a subject by how they react when they did not realize they were being observed. Often in his experience, Starfleet officers tended to be cagey about admitting anything that could be seen as a weakness. It was a truly human condition, for he knew that Vulcan's harbored no such hang ups.
He needed to look only as far back as his childhood growing up in Hestia, to know how stubborn humans could be. That caused a frown to pass over his face, and he was glad again that he was watching a remove. Patients rarely liked their doctor frowning at them. They always read more into it than needed. And the last thing he really wanted was his new commanding officer to draw the wrong sort of conclusions at an ill opportune time. Which was exactly what this situation was.
Running a finger over the hair on his chin, Xander folded his other arm around his waist and watched. On the monitor, as in the room, he could see the three women - Commander Olive Saugn, the captain of the Discovery, Ensign Cara Ross, the newly graduated Chief Science Officer, and Sergeant Raquel Ruiz Master-at-Arms of the ships MACO detachment. Quite the trio. Ensign T'Mil and Lt. Drake had already been cleared through, having not been in close contact with any of the natives. And Sabra Kassab, from the planetary research outpost, was being worked on by one of the nurses in the main infirmary. That left him to deal with the women currently locked up in Decon. While the Commander seemed collected, neither of the younger women seemed pleased with their situation.
The redhead looks like she got dipped in a vat of slime and the feisty brunet looks like she'd been sent through a wood chipper. She really aught to be in sickbay already... Sighing again, Xander entered the room proper, holding out a clipboard in front of him, making a few notes. The doors hissed open and drew the attention of the trio in the actual chamber. Xander came to a halt and waited until he was sure he had their interest, then began, "Commander. Ladies," he addressed Saugn first, then the two junior officers. He made no 'assumptions' about gender, having read all the files of the crew and new he'd give little offense on that front.
"All three of you came into close physical contact with the alien species identified as Kzinti. You're going to need to sit in here for roughly an hour while the standard decon cycle executes. Ensign Ross," he continued, causing Cara to stiffen. She knew that what came next would not be fun. "You, Miss Ross, are a special case. Not only were you in close contact with one of the crashed Kzinti, you had physical interaction with Mr." he paused to check his notes, "Oto Syrano Nakir vin Toyo, an alien of an unknown origin. You were, if Major Anson's report was correct, coated in a sticky excretion by the alien, and then decided the prudent course of action was to dunk your head in a pond of water, after voiding your stomach contents. Is that correct?"
Heat colored the young woman's cheeks as she let out a slow sigh and nodded. But the silence that followed from the doctor showed that either Xander had not seen her nod, or that he required a verbal response. Huffing a bit, Cara replied, "Aye doc, tha's the gist o'it. 'E couldn't keep 'is ruddy hands to 'imself ahnd the stench o'it was makin' me ill." She thought, but could not be sure, that she saw Ruiz snicker. That just made her face turn brighter still, and she clasped her hands behind her back in tight fists.
"Very well," the doctor noted in a somewhat detached tone. He made a few notes, and without looking up, gave his orders. "Ensign, you will disrobe and discard all of your attire. The base scans I've seen from this room show every garment on you to be something of a health hazard. I'm going to recommend burning the lot of it, once we scan it." The color had drained from Cara's face, and her mouth was hanging open. "I mean all of it, Ensign. Not a stitch left. I don't want you inadvertently infecting the crew. Be glad I see no reason to have you shave your hair as well." She opened and closed her mouth a few times, then swore something vulgar in her native tongue, mostly under her breath. The prospect of what she'd been ordered to do was not at all a pleasant one. It wasn't as if she was ashamed of how she looked, but this was not the kind of circumstance that she'd be wanting to put on an impromptu peep show.
"While all three of you are going to need to apply some of the decon-5 gel, Miss Ross, I'm going to recommend a second cycle for you, with..." he paused and turned, looking over to one of the racks of creams and ointments. "Ret-tech b-72. Our Vulcan friends have found it rather successful in cases like this. Wash with it in the alcove to your left. Additionally you will take the full dose from the hypospray I will provide shortly. Its an antibiotic that I want you to use. That's in addition to the anti viral the three of you will need, ladies." This last bit was as much for Saugn and Ruiz as Ross.
"And I will expect all three of you to report to me, daily for the next....week." At this he turned and looked at the trio. "Lots of alien interactions that we know next to nothing about, until I can convince the Vulcan Science Academy, or some friends in the Inter-species Medical Exchange to cough up access to their databases. I'll not take any risks with any of you, please and thank you." There was an air of finality to his words. He didn't ask if they understood. Xander simply laid down the law, as if playing the role of Zeus, instructing mere mortals of how things worked.

[Commander Olivé Saugn | Decon | Deck Five | Starship Discovery NX-04] attn: brutus
Olivé knew Decon was necessary in circumstances. She knew about it firsthand. Any touching of any unknown things required a visit to Decon, just in case of any viruses. Of course, she understood if Cara was embarrassed. Olivé was embarrassed herself the first time she went through Decon. Now, and especially since she was interim captain, she was used to it, at least when she touched something unknown. Some people would take it as a sign of hypochondria, but Olivé knew it set an example.
Olivé was intrigued at how Doctor Minos figured out their new guest’s full name. Maybe he had met him at some point when the Major brought him up. Much as she would’ve liked to see him, she had other pressing matters back on Archer IV, now that the scientists…the real scientists…were safe.
Olivé saw Ruiz snicker as she disrobed, no doubt at Cara’s plight.
“Go easy on her, Sergeant,” Olivé hissed.
But Olivé saw Cara pale at the news that she’ll have to burn her uniform, let alone everything she wore. She approached her with reassurance.
“Doctor’s orders, Ensign,” Olivé said. “And I know better than to argue with the chief medical officer. In fact, if it’ll make you feel any better…Ruiz, let’s disrobe fully with her.”
And with that, she disrobed all the way. Ruiz followed suit, though Olivé had to flinch at seeing she looked a little worse. There seemed to be enough bruises that, if Ruiz had sustained more, she would’ve passed for an antennae-less Andorian turning to his usual shade of anger.
Once she had done so, she proceeded with rubbing on the decon-5 gel. She actually found it easier, without having anything on; no clothing to get in the way yet. She walked over and fetched some of the recommended gel for Cara, Ret-tech b-72. To fetch in advance for her second cycle and then just kept rubbing the gel.

[ Dr. Xander Minos & Ens. Cara Siobhan Ross | Decon chamber | E-Deck | NX-04 Discovery ]
Ensign Ross was more than a little put out by all of this, as she worked her way out of her clothes. There wasn't any real attachment to the uniform, not exactly. She'd have more back in her quarters. And under the jumpsuit, shirt and pants were just the standard issue undergarments. She hadn't worn anything embarrassing or frilly or the like for the mission that day. Sometimes she would spice it up, but only sometimes, and this day hadn't been one of them. It was the idea that she had screwed up so bad as to need to burn everything - destroy what had been worn, because of possible infection to the rest of the crew. That felt like overkill.
And having to do so in front of her commanding officer. I dinnae imagine ah striptease in decon wit th' cap'n in anhy fahntasy, thats' fer sure. she thought bitterly. Not that she'd really fantasize about anything with the captain. Nor anyone else aboard. Not really
She didn't give a damn that Ruiz was there, or even that Dr. Xander, whom seemed to be making and checking notes, had not left the room. He was a doctor, a non entity, and Cara didn't have body shame in the traditional sense. She just liked to dictate the terms in which others saw her, and that was most certainly not the case that day. And she certainly didn't need, or want, the Captain and Ruiz to go through the same thing just because she had to. That was....a lot to deal with.
"Ah, cap'n ye dinnae need ta do tha'on mah account," she made the protest meekly, and ineffectual. Ruiz already had her top off, seemingly unbothered as well, but Cara gasped just a bit. fook me she looks like she lost a foight w't a g'damn Rhino. Despite feeling disgusting, Cara decided she had the better end of it. She felt Xanders gaze on her as the Captain walked over and handed her the second layer of treatment that she'd have to apply, but that would come in a bit. Still, she thanked the other woman, blushing at her state of undress, averting her eyes - but not after looking.
This fooking dae, she thought as she finally pulled her top over her head, and then swiftly bent and divested herself of the underwear she'd been issued. The blue boxer shorts went into the same pile as the tank top had, in a bin that would be sealed for analysis and then incineration. Frowning, she covered her bust with an arm and walked to pick up the hypospray that Xander had set aside specifically for her. She jabbed it into her arm with her free hand, biting her lip for a moment. "Ye'll be sendin' me ah copy o'th results, aye?Ah got fookin' slimed fer that shite, Ah wanna see what all was in et."
Xander looked puzzleled for a moment then parsed her words, staring at her with a confused expression as he worked past her heavy accent. He cocked an eyebrow up in a fashion Cara thought T'Mil would have been proud of, holding her gaze for a long moment in his. Then he gave a little shrug. "That is reasonable, Ensign. Provided you behave and go apply the decon gel. After an hour you'll put the other ointment on and wash with it in the shower alcove. Understood?"
Yer a right cheerful bloke, aye? she thought. Her face - and neck, and shoulders - flushed under his gaze. He wasn't checking her out. It felt like she was a specimen under a microscope, not a naked woman under a man's gaze. It was unnerving. But aloud, she said, "Aye doc, Ah 'eard ye the fierst time. Decon Gel, Anti virial, wait an 'our, use th'hoigh faultin' Vulcan goop, shower, ahn then take th'antibiotic, roight?"
There was a long pause as Xanders eyes narrowed. He wondered if the redhead did it on purpose? Did she lay the accent on thicker just to mess with him, or was she really that hopeless when it came to conversation. With a sigh, he nodded, and made a notation in her file on the board in his hand. 'Unintelligible' it said, added after the note 'follows orders begrudgingly.'
"That is the correct order, Ensign. The sooner you 'goop up' the sooner you may be released and...dressed." Only then did he let his gaze flick over her, up and down. There was no heat in the look, but it still sent a shiver down Ross' spine, and as he'd hoped, had the Ensign scurrying back off to do as she was told. Naked as a jaybird, she set to the task of rubbing the decon gel in, from head to toe, contorting herself as she tried to get at the middle of her back - which was turned to him. There was, he noticed, a tattoo etched into her skin, which actually caused the doctor to smirk for just a moment. She had only the one, the Academy Phoenix, and a year under it which the Belter assumed was her graduating class. The work was well done, an artist's touch to it not some cheap off the shelf thing, picked up at a back alley needle shop, but real quality, with a color shifting aspect to the ink.
Xander shook his head and flipped a switch as the women finished the applications, Cara grunting and huffing, too shy to ask for help, before diverting her attention to her front, sweeping another handful along her stomach, sweeping down to coat the neatly trimmed hairs between her legs. All the while muttering Gaelic oaths under her breath.
The lights in the chamber itself shifted to a violet, almost black light quality, muting the tones of Ruiz' bruises but making Cara's pale skin shine. She could hear Xander, over the comm saying, "Every inch ladies, then an hour under the lights. The clock starts as soon as Ross over there is done." That earned him a stuck out tongue, the same childish gesture thrown over her shoulder that she had suppressed earlier in the shuttle pod. If it registered with Xander, his face didn't show it.

[Sergeant Raquel Ruiz | Decon | Deck Five | Starship Discovery NX-04] attn: brutus Raquel had no problem with disrobing fully. She saw Doctor Minos and was a little taken. She rarely saw the new CMO…the only medical personnel was the strange Vulcan nurse…but when she saw him, she realized this was the second guapo she had seen on the ship, after the pilot, Drake. She made a note to get to know him later, and see who’s the more ideal: El Guapo Doctor, or El Guapo Volante. She looked down at herself and realized that after the tussle with El Tigre, the injuries ruined the image. She had a lot more of a tussle than she realized. She will definitely head for Sickbay…provided El Guapo Doctor was in.
She wondered how many other los guapos were aboard the ship since the refit, and how many were added. She hoped there weren't too many. She couldn't stand having a plethora.
Regardless of her bruises, she did her best to display herself to El Guapo Doctor, hoping she'll pass off as hot.

[ Dr. Xander Minos & Ens. Cara Siobhan Ross | Decon chamber | E-Deck | NX-04 Discovery ]
Xander eventually noticed that the MACO officer was making an attempt for his attention. To date, he had barely encountered her, or End. Ross. Since coming aboard the Discovery he had left most of the routine medical interactions to the nurse from the Interspecies Medical Exchange, the rather excitable Vulcan, T'Lem. A dissident, if he understood things correctly, but a competent one, and that was good enough for Dr. Minos. Let her deal with the mundane, he'd take the interesting.
And this was interesting. The three of them had been up close with alien species not yet encountered by Earth or her Colonies. Not formally in any event. He knew, as he watched Ross raise a leg up to get the back of her thigh, and Ruiz twist in a fashion designed to attract attention, that some Boomer ship might have encountered the K'zinti and just not reported it. That happened all the time. Thought he truly doubted that anyone before the research team had seen the likes of Syrano before. He couldn’t wait to get a full scan of that man, or the cat they’d dragged in. Duty had compelled him to come down here, however, instead of holding up in his precious medical lab, looking over test results and leaving T’Lem to deal with things. The Captain being among the ‘potentially infected’ - and the trio being all of the female persuasion - demanded his attention.
The pale blue eyes flicked over to Commander Saugn. whom, of all of them, seemed the most at ease and the least pretentious, and he shared a look, for just a moment. Then he directed his gaze back to Ruiz. He looked her over and made no effort to hide the fact. Ross was moving slowly to the bench, seemingly done now, and Ruiz was ....a mess. "Sergeant, I'd appreciate it if you would sit down before you fall down."
He chose his words carefully, lessening the sting with what he hoped was a passable smile. "I'll want you in sickbay as soon as we're done here. I'm concerned about internal damage. And I'm sure that as a MACO you are tough as nails, but just as I don't want Ensign Ross to spread disease across the ship I don't want you passing out from trying to prove yourself a prime specimen of Marine breeding."
Cara couldn't quite tell if she were being insulted, or Ruiz was. Or both. She crossed her arms over her bust and sat down on a bench with a huff, shutting her eyes and letting her head fall back against a bulkhead. "Yer prancin' aboot like a prime peacock, lassie," she muttered, sounding more tired than annoyed.

[Commander Olivé Saugn | Decon | Deck Five | Starship Discovery NX-04] attn: brutus
Olivé noticed what Ruiz was doing. She realized what she was doing.
“Sergeant, this isn’t the place to flirt,” she said. “Just apply the gel and then report to Sickbay. We’ll have Major Claudius take charge of your unit down at the planet if need be.”
Ruiz whirled at Olivé and glared. She was about to open her mouth to protest when Olivé forestalled it: “That’s an order.”
Ruiz snapped her mouth back shut and resumed applying the gel.
“And if you’re bored in your recovery, you can always assess security with Chief Minos…the other twin,” added Olivé.
Ruiz’s expression melted from disgruntled to long-suffering. Her inward astonishment was enough that she forgot her usual English. “La borracha loca? Mierda.”
Olivé shrugged. She didn’t care if Ruiz had a problem with her superior and her counterpart in the armory. She remembered the rivalry between Lieutenant Reed and Major Hayes during the Xindi Mission, and she was wondering if a similar rivalry was boiling. If there was going to be trouble between Ruiz and Chief Minos, she was going to relay some choice words.
“Okay, ladies,” she said. “The sooner we get these over with, the better. I got to get back down to the outpost with T’Mil. And I’m taking Lieutenant Bronson, see if he can work things out with our transceiver at the planet. I hate to think of what’s going to happen next.”
